Emergencies – Key Figures

17

The armed conflicts in the eastern DRC is one of the most serious humanitarian emergencies worldwide.

INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS

The population that has been displaced internally has reached 2.7 million people (OCHA, October 2013) 1 million more than in 2011 (OCHA). More than half are children. 60% reside in Kivu, in the east of the country.

MALNUTRITION

The country is also affected by malnutrition – two million children suffer from severe acute malnutrition – and recurring epidemic outbreaks – measles, cholera and Ebola. The UNICEF Emergency and Transition section aims to provide efficient and innovative solutions to humanitarian emergencies to reduce the impact of conflicts and other humanitarian crises on people and strengthen their resilience.

BUDGET

To address these challenges, UNICEF and its partners are leading the largest network of humanitarian actors in the DRC, with a budget of over 100 million U.S. dollars in 2014. A multi-sectoral approach is based on six areas: water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) Education, Nutrition, Health, Household essentials and shelter, and protection. The flagship initiative Rapid Response to Movements of Population (RRMP) can respond quickly to crises in areas affected by conflict and population displacement.
